Individual “Instant” Oat Packs

Money Matters Monday: Individual “Instant” Oat Packs

Instant oatmeal packs: one of the easiest “convenience” foods. You can purchase them in all sorts of different prepackaged flavors.
Or for a much cheaper, much cleaner version you can make your own instant oat packs! You can adapt the oat packs to any of your favorite oatmeal mix-ins and control what ingredients go into it!

Individual “Instant” Oat Packs
General Ingredients
Snack size Ziplock bags
Oats (Quick Cooking or Old Fashioned)
Dried Fruit* (optional)
Nuts (optional)
Spices

Directions
1. When you’re ready to enjoy your oatmeal, grab a packet and pour it into a microwave safe bowl. 
2. Add 2/3 cup milk or water and microwave for about 2 minutes 30 seconds (if using old fashion oats)

*You can dry your own fruit by slicing fresh fruit to your desired size and using a dehydrator or baking on a silpat mat at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours (depending on how moist the fruit is).

Strawberry Banana Oatmeal
Per Packet:
1/3 cup Oats
1/4 cup Dried Strawberry Slices*
1/4 cup Dried Banana Slices*
1 tsp Cinnamon

Apple Spice Oatmeal
Per Packet:
1/3 cup Oats
1/2 cup Dried Apple Slices*
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Nutmeg

Tropical Oatmeal
Per Packet:
1/3 cup Oats
2 Tbsp Dried Mango Pieces
2 Tbsp Dried Pineapple Pieces
1 Tbsp Dried Banana Slices*
2 Tbsp Shredded Coconut

Peanut Butter Oatmeal
Per Packet:
1/3 cup Oats
2 Tbsp PB2
1 Tbsp chopped peanuts
1 tsp cinnamon

Depending on the products and amount of add-in’s that you use, each of these options is about 150 calories with no added sugars, oils, fat, or preservatives!

Some other ideas:

  • Cocoa Loco: 1/2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder and 2 Tbsp Coconut
  • PB Cup: 2 Tbsp PB2 and 1/2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • Mixed Berry: An assortment of mixed dried fruits
